While planning their early summer Athenaeum wedding in Old Town Alexandria, Nora and Matthew focused on hosting a simple, classic event with an excellent guest experience.

The Athenaeum is a relatively small venue, making it perfect for intimate gatherings. This wedding was a bit larger with about 60 guests and the space accommodated them well. This venue is also right in the heart of Old Town Alexandria; it’s literally steps from some of the most popular photo spots so I love how convenient it is for couples. What really makes my photographer’s heart happy, however, is all the gorgeous natural light that streams in through the oversized windows.
We were able to take portraits inside the venue, at the iconic Wales Alley right behind it and at Old Town’s famous Captain’s Row on Prince Street. All these spots are literally within steps of each other! Scroll to see some highlights from this beautiful day:

As I advise most of my couples, Nora and Matthew worked with me this spring during their engagement session. We were lucky enough to make it to the cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. I find that working together prior to a wedding enables clients to feel generally more comfortable in front of the camera. The engagement session also teaches me how they prefer to be seen (let’s be honest, everyone has things they want to highlight and others they may want to minimize). Once I learn someone’s preferences, I can better direct them and make choices during candid photos that help ensure they love those, too!
