Jenny and Nate are medical residents who also somehow managed to plan an absolutely lovely Decatur House wedding in Washington D.C. this spring despite the demands of their careers. This venue is truly unique; it’s run by The White House Historical Association and is located one block north of the White House on Lafayette Square.

As is fairly typical, Jenny and her bridal party got ready at a nearby hotel. I loved the attention to detail shown by this couple; we were actually able to walk to the wedding venue from the hotel.

I LOVED taking couples portraits in the historic portion of the house. The huge, shuttered windows made the place feel more like a Parisian venue than a D.C. one. and let in a ton of that gorgeous natural light that I love. Chandeliers, oversized mirrors and enormous rooms completely the refined urban look and a lovely courtyard set the stage for some family photos and one of my most favorite First Looks ever; Jenny held up a mask made of a picture of their puppy, Murphy for her first look: scroll down to see Nate’s reaction.

A couple of other touches made this wedding feel very personal. They read each other vows they wrote themselves (yes, there were tears) during a ceremony officiated by a close friend. One pro tip anyone can implement in their wedding photography: if you print out your original vows, your photographer can incorporate them into detail photos, just as I did below with Jenny’s vows and rings.
